Add Kin to your AI apps

Add Kin to Codex

OpenAI's coding agent: CLI, IDE extension and desktop app. Give Codex one address, sign in to Kin, and it can use the accounts you connect, under your rules.

Before you start

  • Create a Kin account at app.kinlab.ai and connect at least one account. See Get started.
  • Kin's address for every AI app is https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp. A profile has its own address, shown on the profile. See Profiles.
  • Signing in is the recommended way. Use a token only when the app cannot sign in. You create one in Kin under AI apps, with Connect an AI app and then Paste a token (advanced), and Kin shows it once.

Sign in

  1. In a terminal, add Kin to Codex. Codex starts the sign-in on its own:

    codex mcp add kin --url https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp
  2. If no browser window opens, start the sign-in yourself:

    codex mcp login kin
  3. Choose what Codex may use in the Kin window that opens, then approve.

  4. Check the result. The Auth column for kin should read OAuth:

    codex mcp list

Use a token instead

Replace YOUR_TOKEN with the token you created in Kin under AI apps. See Sign in, or use a token.

  1. Codex reads the token from an environment variable. Add this line to your shell profile so it is always set:

    export KIN_TOKEN="YOUR_TOKEN"
  2. Open a new terminal, then add Kin and name that variable:

    codex mcp add kin --url https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp --bearer-token-env-var KIN_TOKEN
  3. Instead of that command, you can add the server to ~/.codex/config.toml yourself:

    [mcp_servers.kin]
    url = "https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp"
    bearer_token_env_var = "KIN_TOKEN"

Good to know

  • Signing in needs Codex 0.147.0 or newer. Older versions stop with "Authorization server response missing required issuer". Check yours with codex --version, update it, then run codex mcp login kin again.
  • A pasted token also works on older Codex versions. We checked 0.144.0.
  • The Codex CLI, the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share this configuration.
  • In the IDE extension or desktop app you can also open MCP servers in settings, select Add server, choose Streamable HTTP and paste the address. Save it, restart (Restart in the desktop app, Restart extension in the IDE), then select Authenticate.

After you connect

Ask the app to do something with an account you connected, such as "list my open Linear issues". The app searches Kin for a matching action and runs it if your rule allows it. An action set to Ask me waits for you. See Approvals and questions.

To change what this app may use, open AI apps in Kin. See What each AI app may use.

How we checked this guide

We ran these steps with Codex CLI 0.162.1 on October 13, 2026: sign-in, renewing it after the first hour, the tools, and a pasted token.

Source: Codex documentation. These apps change their setup screens often, so check there if a step looks different.
