AI apps

Add Kin to Zed

The Zed editor's agent panel.

Before you start

Sign in

  1. In Zed, open Settings, then AI, then MCP Servers.

  2. Select Add Server, then Add Remote Server.

  3. Enter kin as the Server Name and paste this as its URL. Leave Headers and OAuth Client ID empty, then select Save:

    https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp
  4. Under kin, Zed says "Authenticate to connect this server". Select Authenticate. A Kin window opens in your browser. Kin cannot check who Zed is, so it starts read only. Check the connections ticked for it, choose Can read and change if it should make changes, then approve.

  5. The dot next to kin turns green, and its tooltip says Server is active.

  • Zed signs in only when the server has no Authorization header. Remove the header to sign in instead of using a token.

After you connect

Ask the app to do something with an account you connected, such as "list my open Linear issues". The app searches Kin for a matching action and runs it if your rule allows it. An action set to Ask me waits for you. See Approvals and questions.

To change what this app may use, open AI apps in Kin. See What each AI app may use.

Edit the server configuration manually
  1. Instead of the form, you can add Kin to Zed's settings file under context_servers:

    {
      "context_servers": {
        "kin": {
          "url": "https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
Use a profile's address

Kin's address for every AI app is https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp. A profile has its own address, shown on the profile. See Profiles.

Use a token instead

Use a token only when the app cannot sign in. Create one in Kin under AI apps, with Connect an AI app and then Paste a token (advanced). Kin shows it once. Replace YOUR_TOKEN with it. See Sign in, or use a token.

  1. In Zed, open Settings, then AI, then MCP Servers. Select Add Server, then Add Remote Server.

  2. Enter kin as the Server Name and paste the address as its URL. Under Headers, add Authorization with the value Bearer YOUR_TOKEN, then select Save.

  3. Or add it to Zed's settings file:

    {
      "context_servers": {
        "kin": {
          "url": "https://app.kinlab.ai/mcp",
          "headers": {
            "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
          }
        }
      }
    }

Good to know

  • If the settings file already lists other servers under context_servers, add the kin entry beside them.

How we checked this guide

These steps follow Zed documentation as of October 31, 2026. We have not run every step.

Zed was not run here. Zed identifies itself with a client document published at zed.dev, and we checked that Kin's own code accepts it. The screen names are the ones in Zed 1.26.2's source code.

Source: Zed documentation. These apps change their screens often, so check there if a step looks different.
